Some luxury vinyl products can be installed over existing tile. The decision depends on the condition of the tile, the preparation required and the instructions for the exact flooring you choose. Keeping the tile may reduce demolition, but it does not eliminate the need for a careful inspection.
1. Start with the tile underneath
Before installing luxury vinyl plank (LVP) over tile, loose or moving tiles, cracks and signs of moisture need evaluation. A new layer of flooring will not repair problems underneath it. An on-site assessment helps determine whether the tile can remain or whether removal is the better option.
2. Plan for a flat, properly prepared surface
Uneven tile edges and deep grout joints may require correction. Preparation requirements vary with plank construction and the chosen installation system. Follow the selected manufacturer’s guidance for surface flatness, grout treatment, moisture protection and underlayment.
When removing the tile may be the better choice
Removal may be the better option when the tile is loose or moving, underlying damage needs attention, or the added height would cause problems at doors, appliances or adjoining floors. It may also be necessary when the chosen flooring manufacturer does not approve the existing surface. An on-site assessment can help determine whether preparation is practical or starting with the substrate makes more sense.
3. Check what the added height changes
Adding flooring raises the finished surface. Check door clearance, sliding-door tracks, appliance access and transitions to neighboring rooms. Baseboards, trim and stair connections may also affect the plan.
4. Understand the potential savings
Keeping suitable tile may reduce demolition labor, debris disposal and disruption inside your home. Those savings depend on the condition of the existing floor and the work needed to prepare it.
Grout treatment, surface correction, moisture protection where required, transitions and clearance adjustments can offset some of the savings. Compare written estimates for both approaches, including preparation and finishing details, rather than assuming an overlay will always cost less.
