The wear layer is the clear, protective top coat on every luxury vinyl plank. It sits above the printed design layer and takes the daily abuse, including foot traffic, dog claws, dragged toys, and grit tracked in from outside. It's measured in mils (thousandths of an inch), and it's one of the most important numbers to compare when you're shopping.
A thicker wear layer means better protection against scratches, scuffs, and wear over time. As a general guide, 12 mil wear layers are well suited to most residential rooms. 20 mil and above is built for heavy traffic, large dogs, and busy households that want extra peace of mind. Many premium products also add a surface treatment, such as ceramic bead or aluminum oxide, for even more scratch resistance.
